San Beda avenges NCAA Finals defeat vs. Letran in PCCL clash

MANILA — San Beda pulled off a revenge of sorts in its NCAA men’s basketball finals loss to Letran with a 76-53 blowout in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) NCAA-UAAP Challenge at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City on Sunday.

The Red Lions slowly stomped their class against the Knights and finally shut them down in the fourth quarter, holding them to just eight points.

Calvin Oftana led San Beda, which bounced back from its 69-83 loss to Ateneo the night before, with 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four steals, and three blocks.

Ralph Penuela added 16 points, four assists, and three assists.

The Red Lions still have a chance of going to the PCCL Final 4, but they must beat the UST Growling Tigers on February 15 to do so.

The top two teams after the single round robin tournament will qualify for the national semifinals, joining the Luzon and the Vis-Min regional champions.

UST is playing Ateneo as of posting in a rematch of the UAAP Finals.

Jeo Ambohot put up 13 markers and seven boards for Letran, which was knocked out of the PCCL Final 4 contention. (PNA)
